I’m a Boomer – Here’s How I Do Business on Your Website

Now let me explain what kind of visitor and shopper I will be if I come to visit your website. First, I take my time to research and find out everything about you and your products before I buy. In fact, if I'm in doubt I don't buy; instead, I go away and pray about it and wait for assurance that this purchase is okay with God. Meantime, I will likely check out your name, your company name, and your products to see what experience others have had with you.

I’m a Boomer – here’s how I do Business on your Website

Okay, I confess, I’m in my early 70s, which makes me a “Boomer” – that segment of society born 1946-1964, and now ages 56-74.

We Boomers are nearly the largest demographic, and unfortunately, the younger folks often treat us as if we are done living and lining up at the door to shuffle off to eternity. I am taking this opportunity to show that is not so with me, nor with many other Boomers I know.

I’ve never been to university, but in my 50s, after Mom died, whom I cared for to her dying day, I took up the challenge of learning how to use a computer and how to go online. I have taught myself many things, including web design, mailing lists, and have set up several online businesses. So I am not an ignorant backwards Boomer. Get used to that!

Now let me explain what kind of visitor and shopper I will be if I come to visit your website.

First, I take my time to research and find out everything about you and your products before I buy. In fact, if I’m in doubt I don’t buy; instead, I go away and pray about it and wait for assurance that this purchase is okay with God. Meantime, I will likely check out your name, your company name, and your products to see what experience others have had with you.

There are others who see something, think, “I like that!” and immediately buy it. They are probably several decades younger.

(Mind you, there are fools in my age category too. I’m afraid some individuals never grow up, even if they get older).

Ready for more?

I laugh easily – but not necessarily at what you’d think. Vulgar, or risque images in your ads will turn me off. Stick to clean humour.

I LIKE search engines, and I know how to find out stuff. If you just show me fluffy benefits, and no features, I know where to go find out more. If that leads me to a more informative site, I’m most likely to buy there. Oh I know, the marketing gurus advise to sell the “benefits, the lifestyle”, etc.; well they are not aiming at Boomers like me!

(…Psst. Research shows that we Boomers have far more money than the younger generations; you’d be smart not to ignore us. 🙂 )

chatting on social media

chatting on social media

I’m not so very fond of Social Media site. That’s not because I disdain having conversations with people. I do like and care about people, but I’m also self-disciplined about how I spend my time. I’m a born storyteller and if someone gets me going I can contribute in a lively fashion to a conversation whether offline or online. However, I feel as if I’m sauntering around in a mall looking for someone to stop and shoot the breeze with me, when I’m on Social media sites.

So I will zip in, make a quick prepared post, take a quick look around and be on my way. I stay on agenda. So… if you expect to find me, and persuade me to your cause on Facebook or one of that ilk, you will be disappointed. I’m not speaking for ALL Boomers on this, but there are a good number who think like me.

Don’t think of me, or treat me as “old.” Unless I’m in pain for a spell, I feel quite young inside, with a mind that still goes at least 300 miles per hour, and often travels on 2 or 3 highways at the same time! If I’m quiet for a while and look like I’m resting – I’m actually spinning books in my head.

Let me boil this down to three business tips for you when dealing with Boomers:
1. I appreciate good customer service.
2. I like the convenience of online buying – but don’t push me! I’ll abandon the cart! Or just stop browsing and look for another site.
3. KEEP YOUR PROMISES! (Guarantees). I’m not afraid to go to the authorities and get after you!

P.S. if you are a Boomer and feel you could handle some business online – I suggest you try my Scavenger Hunt. It’s a quiz-game that takes you around to visit SEVEN business ideas and explore what it would take to join that as a business online. If you get at least half of the quiz questions right, take on the other two challenges and decide to give it a hearty try you win my e-book, 40 Online Business Ideas. (Lots of fodder for your decision-making. :)) I will also mentor you through the email list, eAction.
