Did You Ever Go on a Scavenger Hunt?

Did You Ever Go on a Scavenger Hunt?

Did you ever go on a Scavenger Hunt at a party, or as a teen in a youth group? (They don’t seem to happen so often any more). Do you remember being divided into small teams with a list of things to collect? The team that came back with the most items won, and would get the extra treat. Some times the list would be themed to the nearest holiday, and sometimes it would just contain a crazy list of miscellaneous items that might be really tricky to find. It was wild fun, wasn’t it?

Elsa Maxwell made Scavenger Hunts a party game

Elsa Maxwell

Apparently, scavenger hunts originated in folklore games, but they were popularized by gossip columnist, Elsa Maxwell, in the 1930s when she threw parties in New York. She sent guests out on the street to find strange items.

Some American universities have played them over the years. More recently, Internet scavenger hunts invite participants to visit different websites to find clues and solve puzzles, sometimes for a prize. The first internet hunt was developed in 1992 by Rick Gates to encourage people to explore the resources available online. Several feature films and television series have used online scavenger hunts as viral marketing.

I did not know about all that, when I first came online in 1999, and began to learn about creating websites, and doing some affiliate marketing. The idea came to me to do something interactive with visitors to my site, along the lines of a scavenger hunt. Only I didn’t know how to make it happen. Now I have figured out a way!

My version has individuals (or couples and small groups if they want to work together), follow a tour Guide who takes them to visit certain sites, and explains how that business would work if you were to take it up. You are allowed to explore all over the site and gather as much information as you like. Then you would answer 4 questions about that business before moving on to the next one.

I’ve toyed with the idea of insisting on perfect scores on the quizzes, but have decided to make it easy on the participants. They only need to get 2 questions answered correctly for each business visited, and they need to sign up for one business idea and one tool to make it work. Each one who meets those qualifications wins the prize.

That prize is my new e-book, “40 Online Business Ideas for You.” (A $39.95 value).

For the sake of those who don’t have time to play the Scavenger Hunt game, or who think such frivolity and fun is beneath them – I will allow them to purchase the e-book and waste no time in reading it.

I’ll be honest with you, I am aware that many people buy an e-book and never even open it. I’m hoping those who play the Scavenger Hunt game will find themselves draw into the tour of online business ideas and the possibility that they could in fact make one work and become profitable through it. So I hold out higher hopes for the scavenger participants to be more successful in the long run. But… we’ll see.

To start you just need to sign up with your name and email address. The email address needs to be confirmed, and then you can begin. That signup adds you to my mailing list where you will get regular emails teaching he basics of running an online business. It is a mini-course, all for free. Of course, if you change your mind or lose interest you can always unsubscribe with a single click, which is found at the bottom of every email message.

On the other hand, if you choose to purchase the e-book – well, then you are contributing to my advertising budget, so I will be grateful. You will get a series of emails from me with helps for deciding which business idea(s) is/are best for you. If you choose one of those businesses you will also get the free eAction mini-course by email.
